Growing up I always ate meat, it was just normal for our family. Almost every meal I ate had some type of meat, except maybe breakfast sometimes.
When I moved to California I was living in a place where eating plant based was more accessible and changed my eating habits.
I may have gone to some extremes at times but eventually started eating fish again when I went to Florida and then to St. Croix.
During my yoga teacher training we discussed the types of food, Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic.
1. Sattvic, which is pure and balanced is mostly plant based giving high energy and mental clarity.
2. Rajasic provide energy but then leave you feeling hungry still as they lack key nutrients.
3. Tamasic are foods that are very low in energy and usually highly processed.
Every culture, belief system and religion has their own approach towards health and food. Being here in Morocco, eating plant based and vegan is not as common but still possible.
In Spain, they love jamón and it is definitely more rare to find vegan and plant based restaurants unless you live in big cities or expat communities.
Where you live and where you are from has a big impact on your diet. If you live somewhere tropical and warm, you can have an abundance of plants and fish, eating meat less often. If you live somewhere cold, you adjust to the environment and eat more meat, dairy and seasonal produce.
Recently, I watched the series The Blue Zone on Netflix and they showed communities with populations living over 100 years old and their lifestyle. Most of them ate a mostly plant based diet regardless of the climate and they also moved their body more organically and intentionally. Socialization was also a big factor in life expectancy and having strong community and family were very important to their health.
Before I got pregnant I had been eating mostly plant based and meat/fish on occasions. But then when I was pregnant and I smelled bbq I got cravings for chicken. As a woman, my body has gone through many changes and phases of food choices and restrictions.
Although I am eating a mix of protein from plants and animals now, I am changing my mindset towards nourishment. I choose to value quality over quantity and look for new ways to adapt to my environment instead of feeling like my options are limited.
I am still struggling with my beliefs about eating meat and know that everyone is different and has their own experience. If you are feeling confused about all of misinformation about nutrition online lately, I hear you and I know what you are feeling. We are happy to help debunk the myths and share helpful tips for finding balance and nourishment wherever you are in the world!
